If you want to make any of the checklist items mandatory follow the steps below:
Click on 3 dots for a checklist item and select “Make mandatory”:

By default, checklist items are not marked as mandatory. To make items mandatory, you can use the following:
context menu of checklist items in UI;
full-screen editor;
correct format when adding an item from quick mode or updating the Checklists custom field.
If you want to make any of the checklist items non-mandatorymandatory and find more details about the feature, follow the steps below:
Click on 3 dots for a checklist item and select “Make non-mandatory”:

Issue view;
Template pop-up from Issue view;
Create Template pop-up from Issue view;
Template tab from Project Settings;
Create Template pop-up from Project Settings;
Issue view on customer portal;
Assignee email notifications;
Smart Checklist History.
To update checklist items using a full-screen editor use this format (for example add mandatory items, make non-mandatory items mandatory) use this format:

Mandatory items completed validator
In addition to the “Mandatory items” feature, Smart Checklist for Jira. Pro version users could configure and use the Mandatory “Mandatory items completed validatorvalidator”. It will help to prevent prevent the Jira issue from transition to the next state if not all Smart Checklist mandatory items are checked/completed. That's possible by adding a corresponding validator to your workflow transition.
