Create Issues from Template
Quickly create issues from a template with just one click. Save time, ensure consistency, and maintain process compliance📋
Overview
Smart Templates lets you generate Jira issues from a predefined template, so recurring work – onboarding, feature release, project kick-off – is set up the same way every time.
There are two ways to do it:
From the Template List – create a full issue hierarchy from a template in one click.
From the Create Issue screen – apply a template to a single Jira issue as you create it.
Create Issues from the Template List
You can create a full issue hierarchy from a template in one click, straight from the Template list.
Navigate to the Template list via Apps or Project navigation bar.
Find the Template you want to create issues from.
You can expand the template to preview details.
Click the Create Issues button. A window opens where you can:
fill in the template variables, if it has any
preview the issue hierarchy and select the issues you want to apply from the template
Click Create. You’ll see a confirmation message that the issues have been successfully created ✅
You can also track all created issues from the template in the Template History.
💡HINT: You can also schedule issue creation or automate it using Jira automation to create issues automatically. Read more here → Scheduler Template Automation with Webhook links
Apply Template on the Create Issue Screen
Select the template you want to apply right from the Jira Create Issue screen, using our custom Smart Templates field.
ℹ️ NOTE: To use this functionality, an admin must add the Smart Templates field to your Create Issue screen.
Click Create to open a new Jira issue.
In the Smart Templates field, select the template you want to apply.
You'll see only the templates relevant to the selected Project and Issue Type.
ℹ️ NOTE: On the Create Issue screen, only a single issue is populated from the template – child and sibling issues aren't supported. For the best result, use single-issue templates. If a template has multiple root issues (e.g., 2 Epics), only the first is applied.
ℹ️ NOTE: Most Supported fields work seamlessly, but these cannot be populated from a template on the Create Issue screen: Team, Environment, Time Tracking, Story Points Estimate (team-managed projects), Parent, Linked Issues, Labels (custom field), Assets.
